Iodine While Nursing or Breastfeeding

May 10, 2010

Is taking Iodine (Iodoral)while breastfeeding safe, good, or beneficial?

This question about iodine gets asked alot!

My thoughts are that if breast milk is normally high in iodine and iodine helps milk supply – then yes, you and your baby could only benefit from taking iodine while nursing.  So, is iodine safe while nursing?  What harm could iodine do?  From what I have researched, your body simply gets rid of (urinates) any extra iodine you have…

On the flip side, if you are low thyroid, then you definitely have depleted stores of iodine.  You and your baby are now suffering from not enough iodine.

I have written another post on Safety of Iodine.

Did you know Cretinism is directly related to iodine deficiency?!

Cretinism is a condition of severely stunted physical and mental growth due to untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones (congenital hypothyroidism) due to maternal nutritional deficiency of iodine.
